I Am – Devotional Style Short Stories – “Hold on Tight”

Her injury didn’t heal on its own. The knee still caused pain from the big wave that hit her while splashing in the deep blue sea. The surgery to repair a torn ligament didn’t take long but required more long weeks of physical therapy.  She’s faithfully attended.

Her grin widens as she pumps the stationary bicycle. The mileage gauge rises as her legs pump the peddles. One mile down, she thinks. Watching the number rise and trying to go a little faster her breathing becomes a little more labored.

The number rises.

With a victory shout she points to the gauge, 2.30 miles. “I did it! I topped the last time!”  She excitedly exclaims to the Man standing beside her as she turns to leave the machine. She feels like a victory party should be held.

Continuing her workout she is finally led to a table with dark black cushioning. Hanging her legs over the edge she raises the injured leg, from the knee down and toes pointing up. Up and slowly down. Up and slowly down. A weight is attached to her ankle. It’s not quite as easy now. Up and slowly down. Up and slowly down.

When she has finished 30 repetitions the Man tells her to lie back.

And that’s when it happened.

The room spins violently. “Whooo she cries,” and grabs His arm.  “I’ve got you,” He states emphatically as His strong hands hold her and prevent her from falling off the table.

She’s nauseated and can’t stop the spinning. Fear that the same thing that happened a few years before will re-occur, she holds tight to Him.

The spinning room eases as the Man manipulates her head. Taking her through a few exercises that re-position the tiny crystal in her ear, the room spins again like a kids play yo-yo. She hangs onto Him, and then the spinning finally stops.

She sits quietly for a short time with Him standing beside her.

Looking into the eyes of the Man she feels gratitude for His help and compassion. He makes sure she is no longer dizzy before allowing her to stand.

“Are you able to drive home?” He finally asks gently.

“I think so.” She replies.

He smiles. “You’ll be fine. Just don’t lie down on the way home.”

She laughs and walks to the door.

Isaiah 41:10 – “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Many of us live in fear of the unknown. We don’t know what tomorrow might bring and yet we go about our days with hope and reassurance that all will be well. But there are times that if there has been a particularly scary event that has happened in the past we fear, maybe even subconsciously, that it could happen again. We all have experienced some fearful moments in our lives. As Christians we have learned that God is always with us but has it reached down deep into our hearts that leave us truly reassured and confident? No matter the circumstances we face, no matter the difficult times, and even in the good times, God has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us. Hold on to that promise because He holds you in His hands. He is always there! He is always willing to help you!
