The Whispered Prayer

The drive has been long and tiring but her purpose is genuine. Cutting through the traffic the woman has difficulty concentrating on her driving as she finally pulls into the hospital parking lot and makes her way to her husband’s room.

The calls for Doctors over the P.A. system can be heard as she steps onto the elevator, and people crying in waiting rooms are ignored as she rounds the corner.

Walking past the nurse’s station she finally makes it to room 302 and gently pushes the door open. Her husband is asleep on the long narrow bed with its silver rails raised high on each side.

The T.V. has a game show playing with the volume turned low. She stands by her husband’s bed looking down at the drawn face, the life-giving plastic lines going from I.V. bags into his body. A tear silently slips down her cheek.

Quietly taking a seat she looks up at the T.V. The program has changed and a program about an angel helping others is playing. She reaches for the remote control and turns the volume up just a little so the sound doesn’t disturb her sleeping husband.

Fascinated by the program she watches. No nurse’s come in to disturb them. She watches and near the end of the program a tear escapes down her cheek. “God, if you are real, will you send an angel to help my husband,” she whispers and clicks the T.V. off.

Unbeknownst to her a Man has been standing near her watching as the tears slide down her cheeks. He watches as she whispers her prayer knowing she doesn’t realize she has prayed and has reached out to Him.

“I will prove to you child that I am very real. Just believe.” He tells her.

But she isn’t listening.

A Boy’s Prayer

The day has been busy with school, bike riding, playing with the dog, and finally homework and dinner. As the boy towels off after his shower he dons his superman pajamas and crawls into bed.

He pushes back against the headboard waiting for his mother to come and kiss him goodnight and say their nightly prayers. He picks up the Bible Story Book that they had been reading from and opens its pages.

He’s reading about Jesus when his mother steps into the room and walks over to his bed and sits on the edge. She smiles, rustles his damp hair and asks, “What is it saying about Jesus?”

He gives a brief comment and then blurts out, “I want Jesus in my heart, mama.” He’s mentioned it before but would quickly change his mind out of a lack of understanding, so Mom asks him a few questions and they talk for a short time.

“Are you wanting to ask Jesus to be your Savior, to come into your heart now?” his mother asks. A big grin crosses his face and an excited, “yes!” bursts from his lips.

Mom leads him in a prayer thanking God for His forgiveness and for loving him. The boy suddenly states, “I know you are God’s Son and you died for me. Jesus, will you come and live in my heart? Amen.”

Mom can’t help it, tears spill down her cheeks.

In her mind’s eye she sees Jesus standing next to her son. She asks her son if he sees Jesus anywhere in the room. For a long moment he is quiet.

She waits.

He suddenly grins broadly and states, “He’s standing by my shoulder.” She reaches over and hugs her son tightly and then tells him that’s exactly what she saw.

The Man was standing right next to her son as he gave his life to Christ.

The Trumpet

The moon shines brightly in one part of the land and in another the sun is shining brightly on a beautiful summer day. In one part of the world the workers are in their fields and the other side of the world all sleep, except those with the night shift and those who prowl about.

Some are going about their day without a care in the world. Some have many thoughts and dreams skittering through their minds as they sleep in their beds. Women are snuggled close to their husbands, children cling to their teddy bears, and some are huddled in doorways.

As the sun lowers in the skies, the moon rises. On the other side, the moon fades in the distance and the sun creeps up in its place. The day and the night are on schedule when the clouds separate. A blast of an angel’s horn fills the air and a white steed tramples the clouds as it makes its way across the heavens.

Cars are speeding down the highways, airplanes are scooting across the sky, trains are on their tracks filled with sleeping people. No one seems to notice that all of heaven has begun to shake. Oh, a few stop, listen, and then go about their business.

Then it happens.

Planes suddenly fall from the sky, cars run off the road, trains leave their tracks and the thunder of hooves fills the air. People have suddenly left their beds, their homes, their fields, their offices, while others stand gaping at the sky as they watch loved ones filling the air.

The prayers of the saints have been heard.

“Come Lord Jesus, come,” has been answered.

(Sue’s version) “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.” 1Thessalonians 4:16

~~~
There are many who do not believe in the church being caught up in the air with our Lord and Savior. They use the excuse that “Rapture” is not in the Bible. On that point they are right. The word, “rapture” is not in the Bible but doesn’t, “caught up in the air” constitute the same thing? Throughout the Bible there are many references about heaven and hell. If there were no heaven then why bother to be saved? Why give our life to Jesus Christ if our only hope is a cold grave? Not only that, but He said He is making a place for us, the children of God. (John 14:3) I heard a pastor say on his program in reference to Jesus’ return, “planes falling from the sky and cars with no driver’s, is poppy-cock! That is just silly teaching.” My question is, will all humanity, worldwide, day or night, be in their beds asleep when Jesus comes back for His church? We are to be waiting and watching for the Lord’s return. We are to be praying, reading our Bibles, serving the Lord in whatever He calls us to do, and to be ready spiritually to meet our Savior in a blink of an eye. Get ready, Jesus is coming back. Hallelujah and Amen.
Dinner Guests
A soft breeze rustles the thick leaves on the abundance of trees. The grass is dark green and lush, and the Azaleas are in full bloom basking in the warm sun.
The woman goes to her garage and picking up the small bucket she fills it with corn kernels and smiles. They’ll get their dinner today, she thinks.
Donning her boots she steps out the back door and wades through the wet grass to the “plate” she has hanging on a shepherd’s hook and pours the corn, filling it.
Later that evening, just before the sun recedes, she excitedly goes to her back deck and takes a seat to wait.
Kicking up her feet and settling down, a Man steps up and asks, “May I join you?” She smiles, pats the seat of the rocking chair beside her, and the Man takes a seat.
They chat softly for a few minutes and suddenly she exclaims, “Here they come!”
Gracefully, almost as though they are gliding, three sleek coated tan doe deer walk across the upper part of her yard and are heading for their dinner of corn.
The woman smiles broadly. “Oh how I love seeing them,” she whispers to the Man.
“I know.” He replies.
“They are so beautiful and so graceful. Oh look! Two are eating together. Those are the twins; Dolly and Molly.” She whispers pointing to the two younger deer.
The Man smiles broadly. He loves the joy she is feeling.
“You had one you could walk up to last year. You named her Betsy.” The Man states.
“How did you know that!?” she asks surprised.
“I am the I Am. I created them.” Then adds, “And you.”
Shocked, “Oh my gosh! You’re…”
The Man cuts her off.
He smiles at her and states, “It was nice sitting with you. Enjoy the deer.”
“But wait!” she whispers as He walks off around the corner of her home.
Little But Tough
The skate board flies out from under his feet and lands several feet away. The boy picks himself up off the ground, crying and rubbing his knees.
A Man standing near by watching slowly walks to the boy and asks, “Are you okay?” The boy stiffens his shoulders and pulls himself up to a full stance and exclaims, “Yeah. I’m little but I’m tough!”
The Man laughs and walks over to pick up the skate board. As He hands it back to the boy He says, “The wheel is broken. Maybe your Dad can fix it.”
The boy bursts out crying.
The Man places an arm around the boy’s shoulder and pulls him close as the boy sobs.
“I know you don’t have a Dad.” The Man gently states.
The boy jerks away, swipes roughly at his tears and demands, “How do you know that!?”
“I am the I Am and I know everything about you. There’s an ice cream stand over there. Would you like an ice cream cone? Strawberry, I presume.” The Man smiles broadly.
The boy accepts and while eating their ice cream the Man explains to the boy that even though his father walked out on them when he was a baby that he still has a Father. They talk long after the ice cream has been eaten.
He walks the boy to a nearby shop and has the broken wheel fixed. The boy grabs the newly repaired skateboard and rushes out the door. He jumps on the skate board and as he pushes off he turns to thank the Man.
But the Man is gone.
Answered Prayer
Snow fills the valleys. Trees are laden with the white fluffiness of their intruders. Branches sag under the weight. A Cardinal, dressed in his bright red suit, sits on a snow-covered branch and chirps out his song for all to hear.
Nearby, a rabbit sticks his small black nose out from under a snow laden bush and peers out. Seeing nothing of danger he cautiously steps out onto the snow and hops a few feet, then stops. Leaving small prints in the white covering he ventures a little farther.
In the distance, A Man walks briskly while having to maneuver the large snow shoes his feet are anchored to. His heavy coat is buttoned tightly and His fur hat has sprinkles of snow embedded in the fur. His beard is dusted with white flakes.
What the rabbit doesn’t see is several yards behind the bush he was hiding in is a woman lying in the cold snow. She has been walking to get help when her car broke down  a mile back on the snow-covered road.
Her last words, before collapsing into darkness, “Jesus, help me.”
The Man kneels down beside her.
She’s unaware.
He places His hand over her heart.
It isn’t beating.
He looks heavenward and says a few words in Hebrew. The thump, thump, thump within her chest suddenly rings loud and clear.
When she opens her eyes, she finds herself safely within her car. The motor is running and heat has filled the car. Through the radio speakers the soft words, “Love lifted me, Love lifted me” are being sung.
She blinks several times, looks around, and wonders if she has had  a miraculous encounter with the King of kings and Lord of lords.
Hard Lessons
Four young men stand gaping up at the mountain. One is determined to climb while the others try to talk him out of it, telling him he is inexperienced and will never make it.
The young man takes a deep breath and states, “I’ll go alone if you aren’t coming!” and hikes up the heavy backpack on his back and heads determinedly toward a narrow path that leads part way up the mountain. I can do this myself. I don’t need them! He thinks.
The others watch while shaking their heads. “He has a real death wish,” one boy states.
The young fellow climbs and climbs and before long he looks to be a small speck on the side of the mountain to those watching below.
He grabs at the crags in the rocks. He slowly pulls himself up another inch or two. Sweat drips down his face. His hands are already bloody and blisters form on his fingers.
Another six inches and he stops, breathing hard. His backpack feels fifty pounds heavier.
He finds a narrow ledge just wide enough for him to sit down and rest. He slides the backpack off his back and it suddenly drops over the edge falling hundreds of feet until the lad can no longer see it or hear its crash.
Out of the corner of his eye he sees movement and quickly twists his head to see what it is. Much to his surprise a Man appears at the other end of the ledge.
Clinging to the ledge, breathing hard and scared out of his wits, he yells, “Can you help me, Mister?”
The Man slowly makes His way to the young fellow and sits down beside him. He offers him some water from His water bottle and the boy thanks Him, then takes a long gulping drink.
The young fellow swipes his arm across his mouth and hands the now empty water bottle back to the Man. He scoots back a fraction of an inch to press closer to the rock wall.
“We all have mountains to climb,” the Man states. “But we don’t have to climb them alone.”
The boy looks at Him and asks, “Who are you, and how’d you get up here?”
“I am the I Am and mountains are my specialty.”
“Huh?” The boy replies.
“There are mountains and there are valleys. Lessons are learned in both. It’s how well you traverse both and how well those lessons are learned that will determine your journey.”
The young fellow slowly slides his back up the rocky wall and stands cautiously. “Well, I’ll climb this one!”
His foot slips sending loose rock over the ledge.
The Man grabs him.
“You have much to learn.” The Man states, and helps the young man to the next ledge.
I AM – Devotional Style Short Stories -“With Me or Without Me”
With Me or Without Me
The city lights have dimmed and the crowds have gathered. The people have been protesting and groups for one side of the controversy gather on one side of the street while others on the other side of the controversy gather across from them. Signs are painted, faces painted, children hug their mothers legs.
The police line along the center of the street. It looks like there could be trouble. Curse words have started being shouted, some have a sack of rocks in their hands. Their signs spew filth.
People on the other side have their signs painted also and instead of rocks in sacks, they hold their Bible close. Prayers are lifted and small groups gather in a circle to pray for Divine intervention. There are no shouts, no accusations, and their signs speak love.
A speaker steps out from the rowdy crowd and steps up to a makeshift podium and begins yelling into the microphone. Cheers rise as the speaker praises the killing of innocent children and proclaiming it is the women’s rights.
A Man walks to the podium when the speaker has wound down a bit and gently asks if He may say a few words. She starts to object but steps aside.
The Man looks out across the crowd and silence fills the air. He doesn’t shout but calmly states, “I am the I Am and I knew each of you before you were ever formed in your mother’s womb. I am who formed you and I have given each of you a divine purpose.”
Some boo’s are heard and are quickly hushed when the Man states, a little louder. “I love each of you and the child that is within the womb is mine! If you choose to rid your body of what I have created, you rid yourself of me. For I am in you and you in Me.”
The speaker quickly steps to His side and tries to push Him aside and grab the microphone. He looks at her with a look that only He can give and she quickly steps back.
He stands quietly looking out over the crowd and then speaks.
“I ask that each of you reconsider your position. Eternity is at stake. Live it with Me or live it without Me. Your choice.”
He then steps aside and disappears.
Silence permeates the air and slowly the crowds quietly disperse.
 Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.”
Pick any seed and hold it in your hand. At first it looks inconsequential but look closer. If we could see within the outer shell of that seed we would see that everything, yes everything, that God created it for is there, be it a giant Oak tree or a tiny delicate flower. It’s total purpose is encased within that shell. All that is needed is for it to be planted and nurtured. The same is true within man’s seed. It is planted within a womb and contains everything that is needed to grow into a human being. It is alive, not a “blob of cells” that can be discarded. It is a human being that God created! That seeds destiny was given before that seed ever entered the womb. Every child is created by God and for His good purposes. There are no “accidents” or unwanted children by God. Every life is precious! It is a travesty that there are those who are more than willing to end these precious lives before they can be born into what God created them to be. Forgive those who have sinned against God and His creation, and pray for those who are considering it, that their eyes will be opened before they commit this heinous crime of murder.
